What the vaults actually are
South Bridge was completed in 1788 with nineteen arches, and the spaces inside them were let to tradesmen. They flooded, the businesses left, and the chambers filled with the city's poorest before being sealed and forgotten until the 1980s.
They are cold, unlit beyond the guide's lamps, and uneven underfoot. That physical reality is the appeal — it is not a set.
