The Alhambra at 08:30

First slot of the day at the Nasrid Palaces. Empty courtyards, water still glass in the Court of the Lions. Downhill to San Nicolás for a cortado overlooking the Sierra Nevada and the palace we'd just left. Lunch in Realejo — tomatoes, aubergine drizzled with honey, a jug of tinto de verano. Nap. At sunset, walk the Carrera del Darro up the Albaicín and follow the sound of a solo guitar to a peña flamenca in Sacromonte.

What we've noted for next time

Getting there

Direct flights to Seville (SVQ), Málaga (AGP) and Granada (GRX). AVE high-speed rail from Madrid: 2h30 to Seville, 1h50 to Córdoba, 2h30 to Málaga.

Getting around

Rent a car for the white villages, the Costa de la Luz and the Sierra de Grazalema. Between Seville, Córdoba and Granada the AVE is faster than driving.

Best time to go

March–May for orange blossom and the Semana Santa / feria calendar. September–October for warm sea and empty museums. Avoid July–August: 40 °C in the interior.
