What it is
Fête des Lumières explained
Lyon's four-night festival of light, born from an 1852 votive candle offering to the Virgin: monumental projections on the Fourvière hill, Place des Terreaux and the Saône quays, with two million visitors and windows lit by household candles.
Dates can shift by a day or two when a local council moves the programme to a weekend, so confirm with the town hall before booking non-refundable travel. Accommodation in Lyon tends to sell out weeks ahead of the festival and prices rise sharply on the main night.
